FIRST THINGS FIRST!
Take the doors off and paint the Body of the cabinets. I would recommend using an Enamel paint. Sherwin Williams makes a great one!

Run to your nearest Lowes or HomeDepot and grab some 1 1/2" Lattice wood. After cutting to size to boarder the edge of each door. Above is the Link to the boards I used to create a SHAKER STYLE cabinet look. I used wood glue on each piece before nailing down with 5/8" finishing nails also linked above for your convienence.

Fill in the nail holes with wood putty and sand it smooth. Make sure to sand any ruff edges on the trim a well. It doesn't take much. I usually use just a sanding block and do it by hand. Then all that's left is to prime and paint the doors with your enamel paint!
This is an easy way to update your old school cabinets with out breaking the bank. I've also done this and made an aztec pattern for a SouthWestern style Kitchen on a farm. It was a fun take on the method and I really enjoyed being able to get creative. So have fun with it and let your imagination run wild!
